How to Properly Load Paper and Set Sizes on Your Sharp Copier

To load paper the right way may seem simple, but doing it wrong can cause paper jams, skewed prints, and unnecessary frustration. Whether you’re printing a basic document or a specialty-sized sheet, here’s a quick and easy guide to help you get it right every time.

Step 1: Choose the Correct Paper Tray

Most Sharp copiers have multiple paper trays, each labeled by number. Trays 1 and 2 are typically standard (Letter or Legal), while bypass trays are for custom sizes or specialty media (like envelopes or labels).

Make sure you know what size you’re loading before selecting a tray.

Step 2: Load the Paper

  1. Open the paper tray completely.

  2. Fan the paper stack to prevent pages from sticking together.

  3. Place the paper in the tray print side down (check your packaging if unsure).

  4. Adjust the paper guides snugly to match the paper size. Don’t leave any extra space — loose guides can cause crooked feeding or jams.

  5. Slide the tray back in gently.

💡 Pro Tip: Never overfill the tray. Stay below the max fill line to avoid misfeeds.

Step 3: Confirm or Set the Paper Size

After inserting the tray back in:

  1. The copier screen will usually prompt you to confirm the paper size and type.

  2. If the size is correct, press “OK.”

  3. If not, tap “Change” and select the correct paper size (e.g., 8.5×11, A4, Legal).

  4. You can also choose the paper type — like Plain, Recycled, or Glossy — for optimal printing.

Step 4: Bypass Tray (for Odd Sizes or Specialty Media)

If you’re using the bypass tray:

  1. Insert your custom-sized paper.

  2. A prompt will appear asking for size and type.

  3. Choose or manually input the exact size.

  4. Select the correct paper type to prevent print issues (especially important for labels or thick stock).

Step 5: Check Before You Print

Before sending your job, make sure:

  • Your document is set to the correct paper size

  • You’ve selected the right tray

  • Your print settings match your paper type (especially if you’re using color or high-quality prints)

Avoid These Common Mistakes

  • Loading paper upside down (always check orientation!)

  • Not adjusting the paper guides

  • Forcing the tray shut

  • Forgetting to set custom sizes when using the bypass tray
