Common Locations for Paper Jams and How to Clear Them
- Paper Trays (Tray 1, Tray 2, etc.)
- Check: Paper can jam here if overfilled or misaligned.
- Clear: Open the tray, remove any crumpled sheets, and ensure proper stacking.
- Bypass Tray
- Check: Specialty media can cause jams if loaded incorrectly.
- Clear: Open the tray, gently remove jams, and confirm correct media type.
- Inside the Copier (Front Cover)
- Check: Jams often occur where paper passes through the rollers.
- Clear: Open the front cover, carefully pull the paper in the feed direction.
- Fuser Unit Area
- Check: Jams in the fuser, where heat bonds toner to paper.
- Clear: Open the side panel (right side), carefully remove jammed paper, beware of hot surfaces.
- Output Tray/Finisher
- Check: Misalignment or overloading causes jams in the output area.
- Clear: Remove stuck paper and avoid overloading the tray.
- Duplex Unit (Double-Sided Printing)
- Check: Jams during double-sided printing often occur in the duplex unit.
- Clear: Open the access panel, gently pull out jammed sheets.
- Automatic Document Feeder (ADF)
- Check: Jams in the document feeder when trying to scan through ADF.
- Clear: Open the ADF, open the feeder (look for green button) and see if any paper is stuck. Also roll the green wheel beside the button to see if something is stuck there.
Tips to Prevent Paper Jams
- Use the correct paper type and size.
- Clean trays regularly and avoid overfilling.
- Fan paper before loading to separate sheets.
